Celebrating Art and Community: A Look at Hixxy’s Mural in Nine Elms

A Look at Hixxy’s Mural in Nine Elms

At the heart of Nine Elms, an exciting new mural by artist Hixxy (Jo Hicks) has transformed the Arch 42 and Merchants Way area into a vibrant celebration of creativity, music, and community.

Ninelms.org’s Music and Arts team had a wander past to admire this stunning piece of artwork. The mural incorporates elements inspired by New Convent Garden Market, to which Merchant’s Way is a link, and local cultural institutions - it’s a visual dialogue between business, art, music, and the people who live and work in Nine Elms.

The mural features several striking paintings that highlight the essence of the community, including panels representing local landmarks like World Heart Beat Music Academy, Chocolate Films and Matt’s Gallery. These three organisations are not just local treasures; they are part of the six Nine Elms Cultural Anchors, a group of cultural initiatives established as part of the wider development plan for Nine Elms. These places are central to creating a rich and diverse cultural fabric in the area, making Nine Elms a thriving hub for local residents and visitors.

For us, the inclusion of World Heart Beat is particularly special. The academy, known for nurturing young talent and fostering a sense of belonging, is a cornerstone of Nine Elms’ cultural landscape. The section of the mural that pays tribute to World Heart Beat is a vivid representation of the power of music and its ability to unite people from all walks of life.

The mural also highlights Matt’s Gallery, an innovative, established, contemporary art space that moved to the area in 2022 and has become an integral part of the local art scene. Matt’s Gallery has long championed cutting-edge art and the voices of emerging artists, and continues to nurture this in its new home.

Another important addition is Chocolate Films, a local production company known for its focus on creating socially impactful documentaries and films. The mural captures the spirit of Chocolate Films' creative energy, bridging the worlds of film, storytelling, and community.

For us, this mural represents more than just a beautification project; it embodies the collaborative efforts of the artists, institutions, and the local community. The blending of music, art, and cultural references speaks to the diversity and inclusivity that defines Nine Elms. We believe that art has the power to bring people together - whether it’s a student from World Heart Beat passing by on their way to class or an art lover visiting Matt’s Gallery, this mural serves as a meeting point.

The mural has already sparked conversations, brought attention to the talents of local artists, and added a fresh layer of character to Nine Elms. We hope that it will continue to inspire and invite curiosity from everyone who passes by.
